About Toto

The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name comes from the Latin word which means "all inclusive," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.

In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop, but they rebound with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour helped them become a household name across the globe.

After a gap of few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads of previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

In 1984, Toto wrote their first and, to this day only, film score for the film Dune. This was a huge undertaking and the entire band had to be involved. Kingdom of Desire was another hit album. After a world tour, drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen of Le Roux. The band continued to release their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of songs, including "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation, Toto took a break from the spotlight and went on hiatus. This gave the members of the band the chance to pursue their own projects. In 1996, the group reformed for a tour and an album. It was the first time in more than a decade that all the original members were together on stage.

The next year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time that the original Toto members Toto were performing together. Following this, the band broke up again. Toto came back together for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. Tours

Toto has been one of the most popular rock bands for over three decades, releasing massive hits such as "Rosanna," "Hold The Line,"" and their 8X-platinum smash, "Africa." With a variety of influences, from progressive rock to world rhythms to soul and jazz, the group continues to delight fans with their anthemic arena rock.

The band was hit with several setbacks throughout their final times, despite their fame. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Shem von Schröeck took over, but the band wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take the time off from touring due to changing the lineup of their band and a disappointing series of releases. Toto returned to touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album marked a return to form for the group, and the tour accompanied by sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the addition of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, both of whom had returned to the band.

Toto's music is just as relevant today as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, gaining new fans with each generation. Their success has made Toto an everlasting fixture in pop culture. Their live performances are always full of energy and excitement.
